Our History
In 1955, the Wood Station Baptist Church sponsored the Ross Baptist Mission. The work started with 16 members and its first meeting on January 12, 1955 in the home of Mrs. Nancy Lancaster. They called Brother Paul Grossman as part-time Pastor in February 1955; and on Sunday, November 6, 1955, the Ross Mission was organized into Ross Baptist Church. There were 39 charter members. Mrs. Kay Lancaster Baxter is the only remaining charter member who is also a current member at Ross.
Meetings were originally held in the Old Lodge on Layhigh Road until the purchase of the present property in 1955. At that time the Venice School, or Old Ross School, stood where our front lawn is today. The old school building was remodeled and used for the church until the construction of our educational building was completed in the summer of 1961. The church then moved into the new facility and the old school building was torn down. On September 13, 1961, the name was changed to the First Baptist Church of Ross.
Groundbreaking took place May 2, 1982 for the new auditorium. On July 17, 1982, the Builders for Christ from Texas, our church members, and fellow church members began erecting the new auditorium. September 19, 1982, we held our first service in the beautiful new sanctuary. The building was dedicated October 17, 1982.
